Mölkky Game Idea
Mölkky® is a throwing game from Finland. It is equally suitable for young and old and can be played with any number of players – the more the better. Players throw a wooden pin (the Mölkky®) at numbered skittles. The numbers on the skittles are recorded and added up. The goal of the game is to score exactly fifty points.
Game Equipment
The game includes 12 skittles numbered 1–12, one throwing pin (called Mölkky®), and a score sheet. Game preparation: Mölkky® is best played on grass or sand. The 12 skittles (1–12) are placed close together (wood against wood) as shown in the illustration. Players line up about 3–4 meters away and throw the Mölkky® (the throwing pin) at the skittles. In the first round, the order of play is drawn by lot. In the following rounds, the order is determined by the points scored: the player with the lowest score begins, and the round ends with the player who scored the most points in the previous round. A scorer is appointed, who keeps the score sheet and records the players’ points. If a player fails to score three times in a row, he or she becomes the new scorer.
Game Play
Each player has only one throw per round. The Mölkky® must be thrown underhand – not from shoulder height or over the head. If a single skittle is knocked over, the player scores the number printed on that skittle. If two or more skittles are knocked over, the player scores the number of skittles knocked down (not the sum of their printed numbers). Note: A skittle does not count as knocked down unless it lies completely on the ground. If it is leaning against another skittle or the Mölkky®, it does not count. Before the next player throws, all knocked-down skittles are set upright again. Each skittle is placed back on the spot where its base was lying.
End of the Game
The first player to reach exactly 50 points wins. If a player scores more than 50 points, their score is immediately reduced to 25 points and they must continue from there.
We offer the original Mölkky® game from Finland as well as Number Kubb from Sweden. Number Kubb is the same game, but for licensing reasons it may not be called Mölkky.
